Everything You Need to Know Before Buying an Engagement Ring (Part 1)
January 10, 2019
You’ve finally decided that you’re ready to pop the question, but you’re missing one key element: the engagement ring. This ring is probably one of the biggest purchases of your life, so just as if you were buying a home or a car, it’s important to go into the process prepared. Don’t stress, we’ve got some helpful tips that’ll make shopping a breeze and ensure you end up with the perfect ring for your future fiance.
Consider your partner’s style.
In the weeks or even months before you set out to buy a ring, pay special attention to your significant other’s personal style. What kind of clothing style does she gravitate towards? Classic? Edgy? Vintage? And does she wear delicate, simple jewelry, or does she prefer intricate pieces? How about white versus yellow gold? Study the things she wears on a regular basis and even take notes to share with a jeweler if you need to. Consider her lifestyle traits before you head to the jewelry store as well. If she has a job or hobby where she works with her hands frequently, a ring with elevated diamonds may not be the best choice.
Know your budget.
Before you begin shopping, take a look at your finances and figure out a clear budget. Don’t think you have to stick to the old “three month’s salary” rule; be reasonable about how much you can spend and decide on a number that you feel comfortable with. Having a specific budget may require you to prioritize certain features over others, but it’ll narrow the number of rings you have to look at and keep you from spending more than you want to.
Find a reputable jeweler.
Don’t just head to the nearest mall to begin your search for a ring. Ask friends for recommendations and do some online research to find a distinguished and trustworthy jeweler. Look for merchants with certification from the AGS (American Gemological Society) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the highest standards for gemstones. Search Yelp or other review sources to get the opinions of other buyers. If someone has a bad experience purchasing something as expensive as an engagement ring, they’ll likely let others know.
Think you’re ready to start your search for the ring of your special someone’s dreams? Not quite, there’s more to learn! Check back later this month for more tips on preparing yourself for an engagement ring purchase!
