Even if you’re not much of a traveler, chances are you’ll be traveling at least once after receiving your engagement ring. Many of us travel much more than just on our honeymoons, however, be it for work or leisure. It’s hard enough choosing which pieces of clothing to bring, but selecting jewelry is a whole different story. Not sure what to bring or how to pack? Look no further, we’ve put together a list of Do’s and Don’t’s for traveling with jewelry and keeping it safe.
What do I bring?

DON’T bring those irreplaceable treasures. Unless you’re absolutely dying to wear it out for a night on the town, it’s best to leave the pieces you’re emotionally attached to at home. Realize that you’ll be in an unfamiliar, distant place, so bringing your great grandma’s brooch or your one-of-a-kind anniversary pendant could be a risky move. Your trip should not be spent worrying about losing jewelry, so if you think it’s going to leave you with a nagging feeling, it’s best to leave it at home.

DO wear your expensive pieces. If you’ve decided to bring expensive, meaningful pieces of jewelry with you on your trip, we suggest you wear them while you travel. This way, the piece is always in your sight and you’ll minimize the chance of something happening to it while you’re away.

DON’T go too bold. Overpacking is a habit most of us can relate to because we dress based on our moods and plans, which can change at any moment. Instead of packing four uber-trendy statement necklaces you plan to wear on each day of your trip, choose one or two flashy pieces and stick to neutral, versatile items otherwise. You can’t go wrong with small, basic hoops and studs, and your suitcase won’t exceed the airline’s weight limit either.

DO consider alternatives for your wedding band. This really depends on your own personal preference, but if you’re traveling abroad or are just really worried about it, you may want to consider leaving your engagement ring at home. Many people are uncomfortable or feel “naked” without their wedding rings, which is why we suggest wearing a “replacement” for the time being. Colorless/white gems or crystal mimic the look of a diamond, but at the fraction of the cost. Wearing a temporary ring will satisfy the need to have a ring on your finger, but also give you the peace of mind that your actual ring is safe at home.
