- Caring For Your Ring
Your wedding ring is the ultimate symbol of the love, commitment, and devotion you have to your spouse (not to mention he shelled out a hefty chunk of change for it), so it only makes sense to keep it in tip-top condition. We know that caring for your significant other is your number one priority, but caring for your ring should be somewhere close on the list. Check out these wedding ring maintenance tips to keep your ring as shiny, sparkly, and brilliant as it was the first time you saw it!
-
Don’t be afraid to take it off. Many women believe that their wedding ring must be worn at all times with no exceptions, but a fine piece of jewelry is not constructed to never come off. Your ring is not indestructible, so it’s best to take it off before playing sports, going to the gym, doing yard work, cleaning, and other rigorous activities.
-
Know how to take it off. Being careless or too forceful when removing your ring can cause damage by misshaping the band and loosening or popping out stones. It may seem silly, but take a good 7 to 10 seconds to carefully and delicately remove your ring from your finger. Remember to always remove the ring by the band, not the stone.
-
Know and maintain the correct size. A ring that is too big can easily slide off, and a ring that is too small is more prone to damage during removal. Get your ring resized if you experience significant weight gain or loss and the size of your finger changes.
-
Avoid chemicals. Lotions, sunscreens, perfumes, and other products with chemicals in them can gunk up your ring or even scratch certain gemstones. It’s best to take your ring off completely before applying these products.
-
Store it properly. During periods that you aren’t wearing your ring, store it in a safe place (and for the love of all that is good, do not set it on the edge of the sink or counter). It’s best to keep it in a box or pouch by itself, because if stored with other jewelry, scratches and wear are likely to occur.
-
Keep it clean. There are ways to clean your ring yourself, but damaging it in the process if a very likely risk. It’s best to let the professionals clean and polish your ring for you. At Sartor Hamann, we provide cleaning services free of charge for items purchased from us.
-
Get it insured. Generally, it’s a good idea to get your ring insured, just in case. Theft, misplacement, and some damage cannot be predicted, and you may feel better having this extra peace of mind.
Your wedding ring should be just as dazzling on your 50th anniversary as it was on your wedding day. For more information about wedding and engagement rings and maintenance, contact us here or in store.
